Supergirl, and Why It’s The Best Decision CBS Has Made in Years.

Sorry, Stephen Colbert, I adore you to the moon and back- but I think we both agree that nothing on The Late Show can top the raw emotion I felt while watching the Supergirl premiere. I don’t think I’ve teared up that quickly while watching tv, ever. It felt like there was finally a show that was 100% made for me, and I love it. I still can’t get over how great the revamp of her suit looks on screen. 10 seasons please, CBS.

I’m not going to go into spoilers, or anything, but watching Melissa Benoist(Supergirl) kick butt, and flounder around with the idea of being a hero was surprisingly refreshing. Usually with a female protagonist they’re just clumsy and awkward for no real reason, but in Supergirl we get a sense of realness that I haven’t seen in years. She doesn’t have to be stoic, and majestic at all times; we get to see her learn to fit into her own skin.

Albeit her relationship with her co-worker/friend, Winn (Jeremy Jordan), seems like it’s not going to be great, in a he’s obsessed with her and doesn’t understand why she doesn’t like him back sort of way, but who knows. It is only the first episode, and I think I can handle the awkward friend zone comments if I get more of the action scenes from the rest of the episode.

(How great was it seeing her break the truck in half? Super great.)

Now, truth be told Superman is my favourite superhero, and I love Smallville so much that I’ve actually purchased all the DVDs. But, I feel like Supergirl is going to be a fresh edition to what is becoming a boring and stagnant superhero era. And one that isn’t full of grit and grime!

I cannot wait to see the armies of little girls dressed as Supergirl, flying around on their bikes, and demolishing the idea that female super heroes aren’t as cool, or strong as the boys. Because if there’s one thing this show has shown us, it’s that Supergirl is every bit as strong as Superman. And I am so excited to see where Kara’s story leads.

It’s strange how much this show means to me. I knew I would like it, but it’s more than that. Supergirl is becoming this beacon of hope that I pray spreads to the creation of other inclusive television shows, and movies; and that it leaks into our society as well. I feel like it’s high time to bring a bit of joy back into the world, and if it’s through the House of El, all the better.

With that being said, CBS, for the love of everything good in this world, please bring back Tom Welling if you decide to actually show Superman. Please, please, please, please.
