This morning Disney dropped the second trailer to the Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One. It touches on Jyn Erso’s backstory, and why she has been singled out by the Rebellion to go on this mission, to secure plans of the Empire’s new battle station/weapon: The Death Star.
The first trailer gave me goose bumps. Just the last three seconds of the trailer, when we hear Vader’s iconic, metallic breaths made my heart jump. The introduction of Felicity Jone’s character, Jyn Erso, meant to me a change in the Star Wars rhetoric. The movie felt new, and yet somehow connected to the original trilogy in a way that made me a little nostalgic.
I feel like this second trailer has taken away from the serious nature of the film the first trailer built up. It felt a little too lighthearted, but I still loved it. After being blown away by The Force Awakens I have full faith in Disney and Lucas Films to churn out great Star Wars films.
What I really loved about this trailer was how they introduced Jyn’s father, the man they are trying to rescue/secure the Death Star plans from. Jyn’s father, Galen Erso, is played by fantastic Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (known for his roles in the James Bond movie: Casino Royale, and as Hannibal Lector on the show Hannibal). Galen is shown as basically being kidnapped, or coerced into joining the Empire to help create the Death Star, or maybe just the weapon– We’re not sure yet. But, what I’m curious to see is whether or not he has truly become one with the Empire, and if that complicates things when Jyn eventually sneaks her way onto the ship/base he is on.
But, the best thing that came from this trailer, in my opinion, were the different worlds we get to see. And this is only in the trailer! In past Star Wars films we mainly stick to about 2, maybe 3 planets per movie, and most of the time we’re only there for a quick second to talk to someone or drop something off– and they’re usually desert planets. In Rogue One, it looks like we’re going to get a lot of planet jumping, and I have a feeling we’re going to get some great space battles in this movie, and how could anyone be mad about that?
We also got the official movie poster this week! Which looks amazing!
After watching this trailer (about 5 times in a row), I’m now just super excited to see this rag-tag bunch in action, on the big screen. The team the Rebellion puts together for this mission is diverse and kind of weird. The score, from the trailers, sounds sooo good. I can’t wait for this movie to come out! It looks like it will be a hoot-and-a-half.
What did you think of the trailer? Excited to see Rogue One in December? Worried about the number of Star Wars films we’re going to get in the coming years? Let me know in the comments below! ❤
